This course is designed to introduce clinicians to an ACT-based treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Dr. Morrison sets out a framework with the main ACT concepts and guides the therapy process step by step, combining the theory with practical clinical cases. Moreover, Dr. Morrison includes techniques, metaphors, and handouts that can be implemented directly in a clinical environment.
This is a really accessible and practical guide to doing qualitative research. The addition of a set of online resources that compliment this book add an excellent practical example of how qualitative work is conducted and analysed. Any Psychology student requiring guidance in how to conduct qualitative work would be well advised to start with this book.
With a very practical focus, the book is pitched at a most accessible level and guides the researcher carefully and in detail through the research process from initial design to the final research report.
Every health professional interacts with patients from different cultures totheir own, not just those from different countries, ethnic or religious groups, but also those with cultural differences due to sexual orientation, lifestyle, beliefs, age, gender, social status or perceived economic worth. The potentialfor confusions in communication and consequent problems are even greater inprimary care mental health than in other areas. This guide for all healthprofessionals provides a model for working in mental health across cultures, andoutlines practical ways of using psychotherapy skills across cultures.
This paper aims to provide researchers with practical information on sample sizes for accurate estimations of therapist effects (TEs). The investigations are based on an integrated sample of 48,648 patients treated by 1800 therapists. Multilevel modeling and resampling were used to realize varying sample size conditions to generate empirical estimates of TEs. Sample size tables, including varying sample size conditions, were constructed and study examples given. This study gives an insight into the potential size of the TE and provides researchers with a practical guide to aid the planning of future studies in this field.
Satisfying daily life functioning is essential in mental healthcare. Standard assessments focus on symptoms and are designed to detect underlying vulnerabilities. However, they offer insufficient insight into patterns of contextual variability and resilience. Consequently, interventions are planned using incomplete information. The experience-sampling method (ESM) is a structured moment-to-moment diary assessing the individual's affect, thoughts, perception and behaviour in the daily life context. ESM helps to understand variation in mental states (e.g., anxiety or sleeping problems) as adaptational processes in relation to contextual challenges (functional analysis). Although ESM has been extensively studied across psychological disorders, the adoption by mental health professionals and their patients remains limited because the 'how to' is unclear. This paper presents a practical guide for ESM application in routine clinical care. It integrates empirical knowledge with expert experiences and provides real-world examples and recommendations for successful implementation. The guide comprises how to engage and motivate patients and how to customize assessments to the patient's needs. It also includes instructions to interpret results and create an atmosphere of shared decision-making. Experience-sampling technology has merits for patients with various mental health complaints and across healthcare settings, although the exact use and implementation may vary depending on the individual case.
