4 Maxims for Analytics Teams

Updated: Feb 11, 2021

  1. Don't suffer in silence: As soon as you get stuck, ask for help! It's likely someone else on your team has encountered the problem before, can offer a unique perspective or help you work through it faster than you can do alone.

  2. If you see something, say something: See something wrong in the data? A contradicting insight? Say something right away. It's always better to fix something early or at least mark an issue down so it can be tracked.

  3. Don't be a hero: The nature of analytics work means that sometimes you'll get sucked down into a rabbit hole of data exploration or delve into intense problem solving. Remember to always give your brain a rest. You're going to be a lot more efficient if you take a step back, recover and come back to the table with renewed energy. This will also prevent burn-out over the long-term!

  4. Sometimes to go fast, you have to go slow: Often times we get pressure from our stakeholders (or even ourselves) to answer questions quickly. Specially when something is wrong. It's tempting to cut-corners, limit exploratory work, or entertain alternative conclusions. This will only hurt you in the long-run. The best thing you can do when feeling the pressure to execute quickly is to slow down, understand the problem, make sure you have all the information and data you need, plan your analysis and then execute carefully.
